Kiwi Ears Forteza

The Kiwi Ears Forteza is a visually striking pair of IEMs that delivers powerful bass, engaging detail, and an enjoyable soundstage at an affordable price. While its tonal balance won’t suit everyone—especially those sensitive to treble or seeking perfectly natural mids—it excels as a fun, energetic set for electronic, pop, and bass-heavy genres.

THE GOOD
  • Beautiful, premium-looking design with ergonomic shells
  • Excellent isolation
  • Portable case included
  • Deep, impactful sub-bass
  • Good detail retrieval in upper mids and treble
  • Wide and immersive soundstage for the price
THE BAD
  • Stock eartips and cable are basic for this price range
  • Requires moderate amplification for best results
  • Lower mids feel overshadowed by the bass
  • Treble can be sharp or sibilant for some listeners

The Kiwi Ears Forteza is one of the brand’s latest releases, featuring a 1BA + 2DD hybrid driver setup at an affordable price point of $59 USD. Known for delivering strong designs and good value, Kiwi Ears has built a reputation among audio enthusiasts, and with the Forteza, they’re experimenting with a dual-dynamic + balanced armature configuration.

We spent several days with the Forteza across different music genres and sources to see how it performs and whether it lives up to Kiwi Ears’ reputation.

Unboxing & Accessories

The Forteza arrives in Kiwi Ears’ familiar packaging with a clean and minimal presentation. Inside, you’ll find:

  • The IEMs themselves
  • A braided 2-pin cable (3.5mm termination)
  • Three sets of silicone eartips
  • A portable zippered case with a mesh pocket for accessories

The inclusion of a carrying case is always appreciated at this price point, as it adds to everyday practicality and portability. While the cable and tips are serviceable, we felt that they were similar to those included with more budget-friendly Kiwi Ears models.

Design & Comfort

This is where the Forteza shines. The semi-transparent resin shells are beautifully crafted, featuring a blue base with sparkling accents and the Kiwi Ears logo in gold lettering. They look premium in hand and even better when worn.

In terms of ergonomics, the shells are shaped to match the natural contours of the ear, offering excellent isolation. During our testing, we noticed they blocked out external noise well, which is a strong advantage for commuting or noisy environments. However, due to their slightly larger size, some users may find them less comfortable during very long listening sessions.

Sound Quality

Bass

The Forteza’s sub-bass performance is the highlight. It delivers a deep, visceral rumble that feels physical and engaging, especially with electronic, pop, and hip-hop tracks. The bass has good impact and presence without drowning everything out, though in faster tracks the bass driver can feel a little slow. For bass lovers, this is easily the most fun part of the Forteza’s tuning.

Midrange

The midrange takes a step back compared to the bass, particularly the lower mids, which can sometimes feel overshadowed. Male vocals and instruments such as piano or cello lose some warmth and body. On the other hand, the upper mids are lifted, bringing female vocals and guitars forward. They sound energetic and lively, though at times the timbre leans a little metallic due to the balanced armature.

Treble

The treble is clear and detailed, pulling out microdetails in recordings that you might not notice with other budget IEMs. However, it can occasionally sound sharp or sibilant depending on the track, which makes it less suited for those sensitive to bright highs. That said, for casual listening at moderate volumes, the treble helps keep the overall sound signature engaging and dynamic.

Soundstage & Imaging

For its price, the Forteza performs admirably in this department. The soundstage is wider than average, with a decent sense of depth. Imaging is accurate, allowing instruments and vocals to be clearly positioned within the mix. This makes live recordings and orchestral tracks particularly enjoyable.

Driveability

The Forteza benefits from a bit of extra power. While they can be run from a smartphone, we found they performed best when paired with a dongle DAC or portable amplifier, which helps bring out their full dynamism.
