The Epomaker RT82 is the latest addition to the brand’s retro-themed RT lineup, offering a compact 75% layout, modern connectivity, and a detachable mini-display designed to add both character and functionality. After spending time with the keyboard across daily workloads and gaming sessions, we found that it delivers a balanced mix of design, customization, and overall usability at a competitive price point.
Design & Build Quality
The RT82 arrives well-packaged with all essential accessories, including a detachable USB-C cable, a 2.4 GHz dongle, a keycap puller with extra Mac-compatible keycaps, and a user guide. The keyboard weighs roughly 1 kg, giving it a stable, substantial feel on the desk.
The chassis is made of ABS plastic, but the finish is clean and reminiscent of classic IBM-style keyboards, which fits well with the RT series’ vintage aesthetic. Despite the plastic construction, the board feels solid, and we did not notice any flex during regular use.
The 75% layout provides a functional balance between compact size and practicality. Essential keys—including the function row and navigation cluster—are retained, allowing it to serve as an all-purpose board for work, gaming, and general productivity.
Display & Customization
A standout feature of the RT82 is its 1.14-inch detachable RT2 display. It attaches magnetically to the top-right corner using pogo pins and can show information such as the date, time, battery level, and user-uploaded animations. While the concept is unique and visually appealing, the current web-based customization tool is fairly limited, offering only basic configuration options.
The keyboard supports QMK/VIA, which significantly enhances its flexibility. Key remapping, macro creation, and layer adjustments are straightforward once the JSON profile is imported. It is one of the few prebuilt keyboards with both VIA compatibility and a customizable screen, adding to its long-term appeal.
Typing Experience
The RT82 uses a gasket-mount structure with multiple internal damping layers, including foam and silicone. This design softens keystrokes and reduces noise, producing a more muted and refined typing sound compared to typical mechanical keyboards.
Our test unit came equipped with Epomaker’s Creamy Jade linear switches, which provide a smooth and stable typing experience. These switches deliver a deeper, satisfying sound profile and work well for both gaming and heavy typing. Users who prefer quieter operation can opt for Epomaker’s Sea Salt Silent switches, and the hot-swappable sockets make it easy to experiment with different switch types.
PBT keycaps with a textured finish improve durability and grip, while the included adjustable kickstands offer comfortable typing angles.
Connectivity & Performance

A 4000 mAh battery powers the board, delivering up to several days of mixed use. With both RGB and the display enabled, battery life decreases noticeably, so users who rely heavily on the screen may prefer to stay wired.
Everyday Use
Across writing sessions, coding, and general multitasking, the RT82 proved comfortable and consistent. The gasket mount and foam layers help maintain a soft, cushioned feel, while the RGB lighting provides even illumination across each key. The detachable display is more of an aesthetic and situational convenience than a functional necessity, but it adds character and helps the board stand out.
For gaming, the Creamy Jade switches perform well in casual and mid-intensity titles. High-intensity FPS players may prefer more sensitive switches, but the board remains capable across genres.
