The ASUS NUC 14 Essential is the more affordable and simplified version of the NUC 14 Pro, targeting users who need a compact mini PC for basic computing tasks. While it shares the same design DNA as the Pro model, it comes with modest specifications and omits pre-installed RAM and storage to keep the price competitive. We’ve been testing this unit to see how well it performs for everyday use. Read our NUC 14 Essential Review.
Key Differences from the Pro Model
Compared to the Pro version, the NUC 14 Essential features less powerful processors and supports a maximum of 16GB of DDR5 SO-DIMM memory at lower frequencies. While the Pro line targets professionals needing higher performance, the Essential is built for cost-effective, entry-level usage. And as expected, this comes at a lower price point—approximately $311 / €275 at the time of writing, excluding RAM and storage.

What’s in the Box
The NUC 14 Essential ships in a small, minimal package. Inside, we found:
- The mini PC unit
- 65W power adapter
- VESA mount bracket with screws
- User manual and warranty documents
The VESA mount allows easy installation behind a monitor or on a wall, which is great for space-constrained setups.
Design and Connectivity
Compact and lightweight at just 470g, the unit measures 135×115×36mm and maintains the familiar design of previous NUCs. Despite the size, it includes a full range of I/O:

Front Ports:
- Power button
- 1× USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C
- 2× USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A
- 1× 3.5mm audio jack
Rear Ports:
- 1× USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C (DisplayPort 1.4)
- 2× USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A
- 1× USB 2.0 Type-A
- 1× HDMI 2.1
- 1× DisplayPort 1.4
- 1× 2.5G RJ45 LAN port
- 1× DC-in
With three video outputs, you can run up to three 4K displays at once—impressive for a PC in this segment. Ventilation is located at the back and underside, and thermal performance is solid thanks to a well-designed cooling solution.
Wireless & Audio Features
The unit includes Wi-Fi 6E via the Intel AX211 module, Bluetooth 5.3, and a Realtek ALC3251 audio chip. For wired connections, there’s a Realtek 2.5G Ethernet controller. These features ensure modern connectivity without compromises.
Setup and Configuration
Since this is a barebones unit, we installed our own storage and RAM. Accessing the internals is straightforward—remove four screws from the bottom panel and you’re in.
Processor Options & Performance
The NUC 14 Essential lineup offers multiple CPU variants: Intel N97, N150, N250, and Core 3 N355. Performance-wise, the NUC 14 Essential handles typical office tasks—web browsing, working with documents, and using cloud apps—with ease. System responsiveness is smooth, and we experienced no major slowdowns or system hiccups during daily use.

Graphics and Multimedia
Graphics are powered by integrated Intel UHD Graphics. While not built for gaming or GPU-intensive work, the chip supports smooth 4K@60FPS playback and handles dual or triple monitor setups without issue. For streaming, media consumption, and basic graphics tasks, it’s perfectly capable.
Real-World Usage
We found the NUC 14 Essential ideal for office tasks, basic media editing, video conferencing, and remote access applications. It also works well for light multitasking and browser-based workloads. However, it’s not designed for modern gaming or demanding software. Older titles and retro console emulation are feasible.
NUC 14 Essential Review: Verdict
The ASUS NUC 14 Essential delivers solid value in a compact form. It’s a practical solution for home offices, schools, retail kiosks, and digital signage. With support for three 4K displays, modern connectivity, and an affordable price, it’s a versatile barebones mini PC for light computing tasks.
If you’re looking for a simple, efficient, and space-saving system—and you’re comfortable installing your own RAM and SSD—the NUC 14 Essential is well worth considering.
