Meta is beginning to explore paid features for WhatsApp, introducing a new subscription tier called WhatsApp Plus. After more than a decade as a fully free messaging platform, the move signals a gradual shift toward optional premium experiences within the app.
Initial details, first reported by WABetaInfo and later supported by Meta’s Help Center, indicate that WhatsApp Plus focuses primarily on personalization. Subscribers gain access to enhanced sticker packs with visual effects, customizable app themes and icons, and the ability to assign unique ringtones to individual contacts. The update also increases chat pin limits from the standard cap to up to 20 conversations, alongside more refined notification controls.
At this stage, the offering is largely cosmetic. However, ongoing development suggests that additional features may be introduced over time as Meta expands the subscription model.
Importantly, WhatsApp’s core functionality remains unchanged. Messaging, voice and video calls, and end-to-end encryption will continue to be available at no cost. The subscription is designed as an optional layer rather than a replacement for existing services.
Pricing has not been officially finalized, Meta is also expected to offer limited free trials to encourage adoption. This move aligns with broader efforts across Meta’s ecosystem. A similar premium concept is being tested for Instagram, featuring tools such as extended Stories and enhanced engagement options. While it remains unclear how widely users will embrace paid customization features, WhatsApp’s large global user base provides strong potential for gradual monetization.
