AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X details go live

On February 7^th, 2020, AMD will release their new 3^rd generation Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. It will be released earlier than what was initially assumed. The new product boasts a 64 core, 128 thread beast of a processor, but that’s not the only beastly feature. The new price tag for AMD’s Threadripper will set you back around 3,990.

Last November AMD released the 3^rd gen Threadripper series such as the 24-core Threadripper 3960X and the 32-core Threadripper 3970X. While those are superbly powerful as it is, AMD did tease the 3990x as well.

Let’s investigate the finer details, according the AMD here is what we know:

• 64 cores, 128 threads simultaneous multi-processing power.
• 288MB of combined cache with the vast I/O from the AMD TRX40 platform
• 88 total PCIe® 4.0 lanes to meet GPU and NVMe needs.
• Quad-channel DDR4 with available ECC support.
• Support up to 2 TB of memory.
• Clock Speed from 2.90 GHz up to, 4.30 GHz on boost.

AMD compared a build with a single 3990X versus one with 2P Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors that accumulate to 56 cores with 112 threads. The AMD Ryzen 3990X was victorious, 30% faster than the Xeon build. The price difference is astronomical, with the 3990X that costs $3,990, compared to $20,000 for 2P Xeon 8280 Processors. That is a $16,010 difference
