Apple releases iOS 17.6.1 with important bug fixes

Apple is here with its fresh and up to the minute iOS 17.6.1 exclusively for iPhone users. iPadOS 17.6.1 and macOS 14.6.1 has also been rolled out alongside for all supported devices. In this joyous moment, Apple took the opportunity to confirm that the newest update build number 20H350, includes bug fixes. The bug fix comes particularly for addressing an issue related to Advanced Data Protection.

The earlier reports showed that a few users were impacted due to the issue. Apple was slightly concerned about a bug that could prevent users from enabling or disabling Advanced Data protection. What caused them trouble is that if they tried to disable Advanced Data Protection, they were prompted to confirm their action. With the latest update, Apple has resolved the problem.

A glimpse into Apple iOS 17.6.1

In the light of the urgent release, Apple didn’t forget to share notes for iOS 17.6.1 and iPadOS 17.6.1 which read: “This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents enabling or disabling Advanced Data Protection.” Apple acknowledged that the Advanced Data Protection bug in iOS 17.6 affected a small number of users. The issue might seem trivial. It was that when a user attempted to turn on the Advanced Data Protection, it failed. The users then received a clear error message notifying that the action was unsuccessful. On the other hand, if a user attempted to turn off this feature, it failed. But the interface would display that the feature had been turned off. Meanwhile it is left active on iCloud.
This triggered ‘trust issues’ among the Apple users.

What is Advanced Data Protection?

Advanced Data Protection is an optional feature. It expands end-to-end encryption to a number of additional iCloud services such as iCloud device backups, Photos, Messages backups, and many more.

iOS Recent updates

iOS released a minor update ‘iOS 17.6’ for the iPhone last month. Like the latest, the update also arrived with bug fixes and security improvements. Apart from the bug fixes, it introduced a new “Catch Up” feature in the TV app. This feature uses machine learning to generate a series of clips of highlights for MLS matches. Apple has also released iOS 16.7.10 for older (non-upgradable) iPhone models. In addition to these updates for iPhone and iPad users, Apple is also rolling out macOS Sonoma 14.6.1.

It is with an emphasis on security, Apple released iOS 17.6.1, alongside updates to iPadOS and macOS Sonoma. These are all minor updates focusing on greater protection. These updates also have a bug fix for Advanced Data Protection. Although the features of these updates are unclear, there is a bug fix that addresses an issue that prevents enabling or disabling Advanced Data Protection for both iOS and iPadOS.

Even though iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 beta cycles are the talk of the town, most iPhone users are still running iOS 17. For updating your iPhone to iOS 17.6.1, go to the Settings app, select General, then choose Software Update.
