Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition Review

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition continues Lenovo’s focus on building a lightweight business laptop without sacrificing the features expected from a premium ThinkPad. The latest generation introduces a redesigned chassis, Intel’s latest Core Ultra platform, improved repairability, Wi-Fi 7, and Lenovo’s Aura Edition software features.

Our review unit is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 355 processor, 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 512GB PCIe SSD, and a 14-inch 2.8K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

At just 0.98kg, portability remains one of its strongest characteristics. However, with pricing starting above $2,000, the X1 Carbon Gen 14 sits firmly in the premium business laptop category.

Specifications

Design & Build

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 retains the familiar black ThinkPad design, but Lenovo has redesigned the internal structure around what it calls a “space frame” chassis. The changes are intended to improve airflow, serviceability and structural efficiency while keeping the laptop extremely light.

At 2.15 pounds, or approximately 0.98kg, the X1 Carbon Gen 14 is exceptionally easy to carry. The top cover uses carbon fiber, while the bottom section varies between magnesium and aluminum depending on the display configuration. Lenovo also states that the laptop has passed MIL-STD-810H durability and reliability testing.

Despite its low weight, the chassis feels solid rather than overly fragile. The familiar ThinkPad styling, red TrackPoint and understated branding also keep the design focused on business use.

Port selection is particularly good for such a thin laptop. On the left are HDMI 2.1, two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Type-C ports, and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack. The right side adds another Thunderbolt 4/USB4 port, USB-A and a Kensington Nano security slot. Configurations with cellular connectivity also include a nano-SIM slot.

Keyboard & Trackpad

The keyboard remains one of the strongest parts of the X1 Carbon.

The full-size, spill-resistant keyboard has 1.5mm of key travel and provides a comfortable amount of feedback for extended typing. Two manual backlight levels are available, along with an automatic mode.

The TrackPoint remains in the centre of the keyboard, accompanied by the traditional three-button arrangement. The touchpad provides a medium-sized surface with haptic feedback and works well for everyday navigation.

For users who spend much of their day writing emails, documents or reports, the keyboard remains one of the main reasons to consider the X1 Carbon.

Display

Our review unit features the 14-inch 2.8K OLED panel with a 2880 × 1800 resolution and 30–120Hz variable refresh rate.

The OLED panel produces strong contrast, vibrant colours and deep blacks. It also supports 100% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR 500 True Black and Low Blue Light certification, while the anti-glare coating helps reduce reflections in brighter environments.

The 120Hz refresh rate makes Windows navigation and scrolling noticeably smoother than a standard 60Hz panel. Users can also choose from several display configurations, including a 1920 × 1200 IPS touch panel with 500-nit brightness.

The display can also lay flat, which is useful when sharing content or working in collaborative environments.

Performance

Our configuration uses the eight-core Intel Core Ultra 7 355 processor with integrated graphics and 32GB of memory.

For normal productivity, the X1 Carbon handles web browsing, office applications, communication tools and multitasking without difficulty. Lenovo has also redesigned the cooling system, including a larger fan and keyboard air intake, while the redesigned motherboard occupies less internal space.

Fan noise increases under sustained workloads, but general operation remains relatively quiet. The chassis also avoids excessive heat during normal productivity.

Gaming is possible, although this is not a gaming laptop. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 ran at slightly above 60 FPS at a heavily reduced internal rendering resolution with Intel XeSS enabled. On battery power, performance remained above 40 FPS in testing. More demanding workloads and modern AAA games remain restricted by the integrated graphics.

Battery Life

The X1 Carbon Gen 14 uses a 58Wh battery and ships with a 65W USB-C GaN charger.

Battery life is adequate for a lightweight business laptop, although it does not stand out as a major strength. The supplied testing recorded an average runtime of around 6.5 hours.

Lenovo supports rapid charging, with the battery reaching approximately 80% in 60 minutes.

One particularly useful characteristic is the laptop’s standby behaviour. The system retains very little charge when left overnight, and instant-on performance makes it easy to resume work the following morning.

Security & Features

Security remains a major part of the ThinkPad experience.

The X1 Carbon Gen 14 supports Windows Hello facial recognition and fingerprint authentication, with the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button. There is also a physical webcam privacy shutter, a dedicated microphone mute key, and support for Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security.

Other business-focused features include a self-healing BIOS, discrete TPM 2.0 and Microsoft Pluton security.

The review unit’s 5MP webcam supports Windows Studio Effects, including automatic framing, eye contact and background effects. Video can be recorded at up to 1440p at 30 FPS. The dual far-field microphone array also provides clear voice recording.

The two 2W speakers support Dolby Atmos and produce good stereo separation and sufficient volume for general use.

Repairability & Sustainability

One of the more significant changes with this generation is Lenovo’s focus on serviceability.

The redesigned internal layout makes several components user-serviceable, including the SSD, battery, keyboard, I/O daughter board and USB-C ports. However, the RAM remains soldered to the motherboard, so memory cannot be upgraded after purchase.

The laptop also uses a significant amount of recycled and bio-based material. Lenovo lists recycled magnesium, recycled carbon fiber, recycled plastics, recycled cobalt and recycled aluminum across different components, while the packaging is plastic-free and uses FSC-certified paper.

These changes give the X1 Carbon Gen 14 better long-term serviceability than many modern thin-and-light laptops, although buyers should choose their RAM capacity carefully at purchase.

Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition stays true to the strengths that have defined the X1 Carbon range. It is extremely light, has one of the better laptop keyboards available, offers a high-quality 2.8K OLED display, and provides a surprisingly comprehensive selection of ports for such a thin machine.

The redesigned chassis also improves repairability, while Wi-Fi 7, optional cellular connectivity, strong security features and Aura Edition software make it well suited to professional users.

The main concern is pricing. Starting at around $2,139, the X1 Carbon Gen 14 is considerably more expensive than many capable premium laptops. Battery life is also only average, while soldered RAM means buyers need to select their memory configuration carefully.

For business professionals who prioritise portability, keyboard quality, security and a lightweight Windows experience, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 remains a compelling premium option. However, its high price means it makes the most sense for users who specifically value the ThinkPad’s design, build quality, serviceability and business-focused features.
