If you’re looking to smarten up your home on a budget, the Ring Battery Video Doorbell is a compelling option. While it lacks some of the advanced features of its pricier counterparts, it delivers sharp HD video, a wide field of view, and easy installation. However, like all Ring doorbells, it requires a subscription to access recorded video and doesn’t support Google or Apple HomeKit integrations.

Design and Features: Simple and Functional

The Ring Battery Doorbell shares a similar design to its more expensive siblings, though it’s slightly smaller at 4.9 by 2.4 by 0.9 inches (HWD). It comes in Satin Nickel or Venetian Bronze finishes and is powered by an internal battery, which can be charged by detaching the unit from your door. For those who prefer hardwiring, the doorbell includes terminals for connecting to existing doorbell wiring.

The front of the device features a doorbell button, a camera, and a microphone, while the back houses wiring terminals, a setup button, and a USB-C charging port. The package includes mounting screws, a USB-C cable, a mounting plate, a plate removal tool, and a user guide. If you need a wedge mounting plate for better positioning, it’s available separately for $19.99.

The camera offers a 1,440 x 1,440-pixel resolution and a 150-degree field of view, providing a head-to-toe view of visitors. It also supports both black-and-white and color night vision. The Ring Battery Doorbell Plus and Pro models upgrade the resolution to 1536p and add features like dual-band Wi-Fi, Pre-Roll video, and Birds Eye View motion tracking.

Performance: Reliable but Subscription-Dependent

The Ring Battery Doorbell records video when the doorbell button is pressed or when motion is detected. However, accessing these recordings requires a Ring Protect subscription.

In testing, the doorbell performed well. Video quality was sharp, with good color saturation during the day. Night vision was clear in black-and-white mode, though color night vision appeared slightly washed out. Motion alerts and doorbell notifications were instantaneous, and the two-way talk feature worked seamlessly. The doorbell also integrates well with Amazon Alexa, allowing us to view live feeds on Echo Show devices and trigger smart home routines.

Setting up the Ring Battery Doorbell was a breeze. After charging the battery, we downloaded the Ring app, scanned the QR code on the back of the device, and connected it to our Wi-Fi network. The entire process took less than 10 minutes, and the doorbell was ready to use. The app is intuitive, offering easy access to live feeds, recorded videos, and settings like motion zones and Quick Replies.
