Cololight GCS Review

Score - 9 / 10

The Cololight GCS is a bold and brilliant step forward in gaming audio. It’s not just a speaker system—it’s an experience. If you’re serious about gaming or just love high-quality sound, this is a must-have.

Gadgets Middle East Editor's Choice

When we first heard about the Cololight GCS, we were intrigued by the idea of a 7.1.2 surround sound system designed specifically for PC gaming. After spending some time with it, we can confidently say that this is one of the most innovative audio solutions we’ve ever experienced. The GCS isn’t just a speaker system—it’s a full-on immersive audio experience that transforms your gaming chair into a powerhouse of sound.

Design and Setup

The Cololight GCS features 11 speakers arranged in a U-shaped ring that straps onto the headrest of your gaming chair. This setup includes seven primary channels, one low-frequency channel (subwoofer), and two overhead channels, creating a true 7.1.2 surround sound experience. The design is sleek and futuristic, and it fits most racing-style gaming chairs with ease. Cololight has also mentioned upcoming support for ergonomic chairs, which is a welcome addition.

Setting up the GCS was surprisingly straightforward. The package includes the speaker unit, two belt covers, back plates, two overhead channels, a power adapter, and an HDMI cable. The installation process took us about 10 minutes, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. The only minor hiccup was the HDMI cable length—it’s a bit short, so we’d recommend getting a longer one if your setup requires it.

Performance and Sound Quality

The GCS delivers an audio experience that’s nothing short of breathtaking. With 11 speakers and a built-in subwoofer, the sound is rich, detailed, and incredibly immersive. The system offers three modes: Universal, FPS, and Theatre.

  • Universal Mode: This mode balances sound across all channels, making it ideal for general use, whether you’re gaming, listening to music, or watching movies.
  • FPS Mode: This is where the GCS truly shines for gamers. It enhances footstep frequencies and reduces low-frequency resonance, giving you a competitive edge in shooters like Call of Duty or PUBG. We could pinpoint enemy locations with incredible accuracy, thanks to the directional audio.
  • Theatre Mode: This mode boosts the center and front channels, along with bass frequencies, making it perfect for movie nights. The overhead channels add a layer of depth that’s usually missing in traditional speaker setups.

The subwoofer delivers a satisfying rumble that you can feel through the chair, adding an extra layer of immersion. While the bass isn’t earth-shaking, it’s more than enough to enhance your gaming or movie-watching experience.

Compatibility and Connectivity

The GCS is compatible with PCs, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. However, to take full advantage of the 7.1.2 surround sound, you’ll need to connect it via HDMI (eARC is recommended). Bluetooth is also an option, but it limits the system to 2.1 channel audio, which doesn’t do justice to the GCS’s capabilities.

One thing to note is that if your display doesn’t support eARC, you might need an HDMI splitter or adapter, which isn’t included in the box. This could be a minor inconvenience for some users, but it’s a small price to pay for the audio quality you get in return.

Impressions and Final Thoughts

The Cololight GCS is a game-changer—literally. It bridges the gap between headphones and traditional surround sound systems, offering a unique audio experience that’s both immersive and space-efficient. The directional sound is precise, and the overhead channels add a level of depth that we’ve never experienced before. Whether you’re gaming, watching movies, or listening to music, the GCS delivers exceptional performance.

That said, there are a few areas where the GCS could improve. The volume levels, while decent, could be a bit louder for those who really want to crank it up. Additionally, the bass, while good, might not satisfy hardcore bass enthusiasts. We’d also love to see some RGB lighting options in future versions, given Cololight’s expertise in that area.

At $599, the GCS is a premium product, but it’s worth every penny for gamers and audiophiles looking for a truly immersive experience. If you’re tired of dealing with headphones or don’t have the space for a full surround sound system, the Cololight GCS is the perfect solution. It’s innovative, practical, and delivers on its promise of bringing 7.1.2 surround sound to your gaming chair.
